Puerto Rico is a true masterpiece. When you ask serious gamers about their favorite games, you are likely to hear this one mentioned.
In Puerto Rico, players play plantation owners on the Caribbean island. The object of the game is to score the most victory points. Victory points are gained by several means including shipping goods overseas and improving your plantation. In fact, one of the beauties of Puerto Rico is that there are numerous routes to success, each one with its own set of strengths and weaknesses. A winning strategy requires carefully weighing your options and correctly evaluating what your opponents are trying to achieve.
Each round, players take turns choosing from a set of roles: prospector, captain, mayor, trader, settler, craftsman or builder. Each role determines what the player may do for that round. For instance, the settler allows you to bring workers on to your plantation, the craftsman allows your plantation to produce trade goods, and the builder allows you to improve your plantation. When a player chooses a role, ALL players get to execute the associated action but the player who chose the role gets the added benefit of going first and typically gets an enhancement to the action (for instance, building at a reduced cost).
If you have never played Puerto Rico, you are truly missing out.
